I Love You

2007

I_love_you_2 performed at Whitworth Gallery, Manchester International Art Festival, Manchester, UK, 2009 Photo: Marco Aneli

We are used to say „I love you“ to express our feeling of love to somebody else. In this performance I am intending to deal with, in a deeper sense, the meaning of the language I am using. I also want to try to touch the subconscious level of understanding about the collective psyche for being a woman which I may identify myself as part of it. For example, I use my personal experiences in the past as sources of thoughts to understand other people’s situation. This I call it as my egocentric point of view. But at the other hand, I realized that those experiences I had in my past may not fit to similar situation happens to other people. And then, the value of learning about the ego has to go further.
This is like when I use the expression of „I love you“, it is often prepared with self-questioning about the value of it. Does the statement content full of desires and expectations? Does it have the true meaning towards the person I love? What is the role of my past experience?
Relationship between human being is probably about a replacement process between egos, or exchanges among the collective identification. Collective identification in this term is identification process derived by the socio-cultural historical background.

The repitition of the phrase "I love you" during the whole duration of the performance, is like a mantra where at some points, depends on the recipients, the meaning of the phrase becomes blur. Language is often said and express, but it is sometimes not enough representative to what we think. Our capability using the language is limited.

In this performance I move together with a sheet of a glass plate (90 x 200 x 1 cm) I hold all the time, while I am repeating the phrase "I love you".
