In a red dress and with her black hair trailing for no less than 11 meters across the floor, Suryodarmo sits cradling a cow liver. In her homeland this organ is commonly associated with the concealment of problems. The work mixes images of elegance and monstrosity and touches upon the transformation of the artist’s personality through an intercultural process.

In einem roten Kleid sitzt Suryodarmo auf dem Boden, ihr schwarzes Haar windet sich elf Meter lang vor ihr auf dem Boden. Sie wiegt eine rohe Rinderleber in den Armen. Die Arbeit geht auf eine javanische Redewendung über die Leber zurück, die die Bedeutung hat “sich vor Schmerz zu verzehren (ohne es zu zeigen)”. Sie ist ein Bild für die Schönheit und Schrecklichkeit, die sich innerhalb einer Person offenbaren kann, aber auch für das Verhältnis der Künstlerin zu ihrer Transformation im interkulturellen Prozess.
